History of the Journal

World Nutrition (WN), the official journal of the World Public Health Nutrition Association (WPHNA), was established in 2010 as a monthly publication primarily featuring editorials and commentaries. By 2012 (volume 3), the journal expanded its scope to include policy analyses and perspective articles, reflecting a growing commitment to advancing public health nutrition scholarship. In 2016, following the departure of the founding Editor-in-Chief, only a single issue was published, marking a temporary transition period.

In 2017, a new Editor-in-Chief assumed leadership and transitioned the journal to a biannual publication schedule, emphasizing rigor, quality, and peer-reviewed content. In 2018 (volume 9), WN introduced original research articles and formally implemented a peer review process aligned with Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) standards, ensuring adherence to internationally recognized ethical and scientific guidelines. During this period, typesetting of research articles was limited to the journal name and DOI.

By 2019 (volume 10), WN adopted a quarterly publication model, which remains in place. The journal experienced a steady increase in published research articles: from 12 in 2019, to 22 in 2020, with fluctuations in subsequent years largely attributable to early typesetting limitations and partial coverage of publication costs by WPHNA.

In 2022 (volume 13), WN introduced professional typesetting for research articles, employing a two-column format, though without a formal journal logo. Further improvements were implemented in 2024, with professional typesetting applied consistently to all article types, including editorials, and the inclusion of the journal logo. These enhancements significantly improved presentation quality, readability, and author satisfaction.

The journal has benefited from sustained editorial leadership. Ted Greiner, PhD, Editor-in-Chief since 2018, implemented rigorous peer review for research articles. Stanley I. R. Okoduwa, PhD, initially joining the editorial board and later promoted to Deputy Editor in 2025, contributed to elevating the journal’s visibility, standardizing typesetting, and ensuring consistent quality across all published content.

Publication trends demonstrate the impact of these editorial and production improvements. While the number of research articles published increased, review articles, policy papers, and commentaries consistently attracted higher citation rates, enhancing the journal’s international visibility and scholarly influence.

Through these measures, World Nutrition has established itself as a peer-reviewed, internationally recognized journal, committed to publishing high-quality research and advancing public health nutrition knowledge globally.
